OpenAI Announces Acquisition of Astral

OpenAI is acquiring Astral to integrate powerful open source developer tools into the Codex ecosystem. Through this acquisition, OpenAI plans to accelerate the growth of Python developer tooling and build the next generation of development environments.

Astral has built core open source tools that form the foundation of modern Python development, such as uv, Ruff, and ty. After the acquisition, OpenAI will continue to support Astral's open source products while combining Astral's engineering expertise with Codex.

OpenAI's goal is to evolve Codex beyond a simple code generator into a system that supports the entire development workflow, including planning, modifying codebases, running tools, verifying results, and maintenance.

Astral's key tools are as follows:

• uv: Simplifies dependency and environment management
• Ruff: Provides extremely fast linting and formatting
• ty: Strengthens type safety across codebases

The acquisition is expected to close following customary closing conditions, including regulatory approval, after which the Astral team will join OpenAI's Codex team to develop Codex into a collaborative tool spanning the entire development lifecycle.
