OpenAI Acquires Promptfoo

OpenAI is acquiring Promptfoo, an AI security platform that helps identify and address vulnerabilities in AI systems. Once the acquisition is complete, Promptfoo's technology will be integrated directly into OpenAI Frontier, the platform for building and operating AI coworkers.

As enterprises bring AI agents into real-world workflows, systematic evaluation and security frameworks capable of testing agent behavior, detecting risks, and managing governance and accountability are emerging as essential requirements.

Through the Frontier platform, OpenAI plans to provide the following core capabilities:

• In-platform security and safety testing: Automated security testing and red-teaming capabilities to identify and address risks such as prompt injection, jailbreaks, data leakage, tool misuse, and policy-violating behavior
• Integration into development workflows: Integrating security as a core part of development and operational processes so agent risks can be identified, investigated, and resolved early
• Oversight and accountability: Integrated reporting and tracking features to document test results, monitor changes, and support AI governance and compliance requirements

The Promptfoo team's tools are used by over 25% of Fortune 500 companies, and it also maintains a widely used open-source CLI and library. OpenAI plans to continue maintaining the existing open-source projects while further enhancing enterprise features within Frontier.
