Kelly Engineer Visits Datadog Dash 2022… Checks Out New Features Including Official OpenTelemetry Support

Kelly's Platform Engineering team engineer Seungyoon Lee attended the Datadog Dash 2022 conference held in New York, USA, and experienced new feature announcements and hands-on workshops. This visit came through selection as one of the final 2 candidates chosen through collaboration with Megazone.

Key Announced Features and Highlights

At the conference Keynote, the official support for OpenTelemetry received the most attention. This is a CNCF project that provides a standard for instrumenting and transmitting metrics, logs, and trace data for application performance analysis. Additionally, Service Catalog, which allows viewing the overall service status and operational details at a glance from a DevOps perspective, PowerPacks, which enables sharing other users' dashboards, and Data Streams, which checks data pipeline progress, were also unveiled. Most of the new features introduced in the demo sessions are in Private Beta stage, and access can be requested through a Google Form or Support Center.

Datadog Headquarters Culture and Implications for Kelly

During the visit to Datadog's New York headquarters, facilities focused on employee welfare and company culture were impressive. The lobby was decorated with Datadog's signature honeycomb-shaped dots, and employees used vending machines where they could freely take consumables like Magic Keyboards or chargers. Additionally, TVs broadcasting live footage of cafeterias from offices around the world fostered a sense of integration with global team members.

The Kelly team assessed that, drawing on this Datadog culture, they could consider automating or streamlining the consumables replacement work that had been handled by their own IT operations team. They also analyzed that the high concentration and on-site presence of offline conferences would be helpful for learning effectiveness and internal knowledge sharing that would be difficult to replace with online documentation or webinars.
