Anthropic and OpenAI may be spending over $1,000 for every $100 a user pays

LLM-based coding tools like Claude Code offer developers remarkable productivity, but questions are being raised about their economic sustainability. The subscription models currently offered are heavily subsidized compared to actual operating costs.

For example, using the Claude Max plan at around $100 per month for 'agentic coding' can incur actual costs of over $1,000 based on API pricing.

Particularly for high-performance models that require complex reasoning or tool use, a single task can cost $75, or a single query using 1 million tokens can exceed $25.

As a result, unlike simple conversational models, the explosive token usage of highly reasoning-intensive agentic AI is placing an enormous economic burden on model providers.
