Kakao Releases Commercially Usable Open-Source LLM 'Kanana 1.5'

Kakao has released Kanana 1.5, an upgraded version of its proprietary language model Kanana. This release includes two models, 8B and 2.1B, and applies the Apache 2.0 license, allowing researchers and enterprises to freely use and tune them for commercial purposes. To enhance Agentic AI performance, Kanana 1.5 expanded its mathematics and coding data, achieving an average 1.5x performance improvement over the previous model in coding, mathematics, and Function Calling capabilities based on Kanana 8B. Additionally, it expanded the Context Length from the previous 8K to a maximum of 128K to support long document processing, and optimized response length to provide concise answers while maintaining accuracy. The released models consist of Kanana-1.5-8b-instruct, Kanana-1.5-2.1b-instruct, and Base models, and Kakao is also developing the next-generation model Kanana 2.
