Kakao Releases Open-Source 'hbase-tools' to Improve HBase Cluster Operational Efficiency

Kakao has released the open-source tool 'hbase-tools' to improve the efficiency of operating large-scale HBase clusters. This tool was developed to address the limitations of existing HBase Shell or Cloudera Manager Express Edition, and consists of three main modules. 'hbase-table-stat' allows users to view table-centric metrics and changes in real-time via the command line and web browser at 10-second intervals. 'hbase-manager' automates complex operational tasks such as rolling restarts that minimize data locality when restarting RegionServers, table-level balancing, pre-splitting, merging empty regions, and sophisticated major compactions. 'hbase-snapshot' supports setting target tables via regular expressions, limiting the number of snapshots, and scheduling, thereby automating backup and recovery management.
