Nix Flakes Support for Millions of Developers via Nix Store Merging

Replit is partnering with Obsidian Systems and Tweag to introduce technology that can merge multiple Nix stores. This will provide millions of Replit users with Nix Flakes and highly portable development environments.

Nix is an open source package manager and build tool that ensures software and development environments work identically anywhere. Replit already applies Nix to every new Repl, offering around 1 million software artifacts.

The goal of this collaboration is to let users take advantage of a wider range of Nix packages and to ensure that a Nix Flake written once can be reproduced identically across various platforms. This will reduce the hassle of setting up development environments and improve collaboration efficiency.

To achieve this, Replit is leveraging Nix store merging technology. Currently, Replit installs packages through the replit.nix file, internally generating Derivation files and setting environment variables to build reproducible environments.
