A Tale of Two Tabs

Replit has launched a new Tabs feature in its workspace. Users can now freely configure their working environment—opening files side by side, running multiple Shell instances simultaneously, and removing unnecessary tools.

This update goes beyond simply adding individual features, focusing on building a flexible system through a new primitive called the general-purpose tab. Users can mix and arrange various tools and files—such as Shell, Console, Docs, and Markdown—into tabs, optimizing their workspace to match the flow of their project.

This structure provides great flexibility not only for users but also for the Replit team. It serves as a foundation for creating custom templates preloaded with tools optimized for specific languages or environments, as well as for building an extensions and plugin ecosystem in the future.
