Hugging Face Releases 2026 Open Source AI Report

According to Hugging Face's data, the open source AI ecosystem has grown rapidly, recording 13 million users, over 2 million models, and over 500,000 datasets. A notable feature is the shift from users simply consuming models to active participation in creating derivative outputs such as fine-tunes, adapters, and benchmarks.

High concentration in the ecosystem is also observed. The top 200 models, just 0.01% of all models, account for about 49.6% of total downloads, while half of all models have fewer than 200 total downloads.

Enterprise participation is also accelerating. Over 30% of Fortune 500 companies hold verified accounts on Hugging Face, and big tech companies including NVIDIA are actively building repositories, driving the ecosystem's growth.

Geographically, the United States and China are leading in model popularity, followed by the United Kingdom, Germany, and France.
