OpenAI Loses Kevin Weil and Bill Peebles Amid 'Side Quest' Cleanup

OpenAI has announced the departures of Kevin Weil and Bill Peebles. Weil led the scientific research initiative and OpenAI for Science, while Peebles is the researcher who created the video tool Sora. The company is continuing its cleanup efforts, moving toward greater focus on enterprise AI and an upcoming 'superapp.'

These departures align with OpenAI's trend of scaling back customer-facing experiments. Sora was discontinued last month, and OpenAI for Science will be absorbed into another internal research team. Weil had also just announced the release of GPT-Rosalind, a model for life sciences research, the day before.

Peebles said that while Sora fueled an industry-wide surge in video investment, such research needs space separate from the main roadmap. Adding to this, Srinivas Narayanan has also internally announced his departure from the company to spend more time with family, indicating that OpenAI's organizational restructuring is proceeding more broadly.
