Google Unveils Workspace Intelligence for Gemini Workspace

Google unveiled Workspace Intelligence at Cloud Next 2026 on April 22. It ties email, chat, files, collaborators, and ongoing projects into a single semantic layer, designed so Gemini-based agents can understand context across the entire Workspace and take action.

The core is an expanded role for Google Chat. Gemini in Chat acts like a command window for work, handling daily briefings, description-based file search, document/slide creation, and meeting scheduling by connecting with Workspace as a whole.

The product updates announced alongside it are also wide-ranging.

• Sheets: create spreadsheets via natural language, import data from external apps such as HubSpot and Salesforce, and a canvas layer for dashboards, heatmaps, and kanban boards
• Docs: generate infographics from business data, batch image editing, comment triage
• Slides: automatically generate an entire editable deck reflecting company templates and visual rules
• Gmail: AI Inbox, AI Overviews for search
• Drive: Drive Projects, a shared context hub that groups files and emails together

This move is in line with the direction Google has been pursuing in recent months. Workspace Studio became generally available in December 2025, and in January 2026 Personal Intelligence was added to the Gemini app, strengthening its connection with Google app data.

Security and governance were also placed front and center. Google stated that Workspace Intelligence operates on the same compliance infrastructure as existing Workspace, and that customer data is not used for advertising or for training models outside of Workspace. This includes admin controls, agent governance tools, client-side encryption, and sovereign data controls for the US and EU, with Germany and India planned for future expansion. Some features will launch within weeks, while Workspace actions in the Gemini Enterprise app, Gemini auto browse in Chrome Enterprise (for US customers), and the Workspace MCP Server remain in preview or private preview.
