Microsoft pushes to shift GitHub Copilot subscribers to full token-based billing

Microsoft plans to switch GitHub Copilot's billing method to token-based billing starting in June. According to internal documents, organizational customers will receive AI credits along with their subscription fee, and usage will be calculated based on actual token cost rather than the existing number of 'requests'.

During the initial promotional period from June to August, Copilot Business will receive pooled AI credits worth $30 for $19 per user per month, and Copilot Enterprise will receive pooled AI credits worth $70 for $39 per month. After that, each will be adjusted to token credits equal to the monthly fee amount, but according to the article, these amounts could change before launch.

Microsoft has already stopped new sign-ups for individual and student accounts, and is also tightening usage limits, such as excluding the Anthropic Opus model from the cheapest $10 plan. However, it is still unclear how this will apply to individual Pro and Pro+ subscribers.
