Using Projects in ChatGPT

Projects is a dedicated space tailored to a specific task or topic, gathering chats, files, instructions, and related context in one place. You don't need to re-explain the same background in every new conversation, making it easy to continue your workflow over time.

To create a project, open Projects in the left menu, create a new project, and give it a name. After that, you can add files, set project instructions, move existing chats in, and if you're on a plan that supports sharing, invite collaborators as well.

This approach is especially useful for work that spans multiple days. You don't need to dig through scattered chats or re-upload the same files, and since related materials are gathered in one place, it's easier to get more consistent results.

It fits well with tasks like the following.

• Long-running research
• Writing and editing that involves multiple drafts
• Recurring planning work
• Managing files and conversations tied to a single goal
• Collaboration where the same materials need to be reviewed together

When creating a new project, you can also choose project-only memory. Turning this setting on shares context only among conversations within the project, without referencing conversations outside the project, which is good for keeping boundaries separate.

On supported plans, you can also use shared projects. All participants share the same files, instructions, and conversation history in real time, reducing the need to manage separate copies. In particular, with ChatGPT Enterprise, admins can control shared projects at the workspace level and manage the scope of deployment through role-based access control.
