IBM Unveils Open-Source Agent Harness CUGA

Developed by IBM Research, CUGA (Configurable Generalist Agent) is an open-source agent harness designed to solve the complex infrastructure work (plumbing) that arises when building agents.

Unlike existing frameworks, CUGA offers the following key features:

• Orchestration automation: Planning, execution loops, tool calls, and state management are handled at the harness level, letting developers focus solely on defining prompts and tool lists.
• CodeAct and self-correction: It combines tool calls with code execution, and through a Reflection stage that revises its own plan when errors occur during execution, it improves success rates on long-horizon tasks.
• Flexible configuration: Reasoning modes (Fast, Balanced, Accurate) can be adjusted via configuration alone, without code changes, and it supports various sandbox environments including local, Docker, and E2B cloud.
• High compatibility: It supports OpenAPI, MCP, and LangChain functions, and allows easy switching between various model providers from OpenAI to watsonx and Ollama.

To demonstrate this, IBM also released 24 practical application examples, ranging from movie recommendations to cloud architecture consulting.
