The Risk of Switching to Open Models Has Been Minimized

Unlike in the past when Linux was difficult to use for professional work due to compatibility and ecosystem issues, that gap has now largely disappeared thanks to web apps and mature open-source software.

In the current LLM space, proprietary models like Claude and GPT hold an edge in performance and API convenience. However, third-party services offering open models come with privacy and data-sharing concerns, while running models directly carries a heavy burden in terms of cost and speed.

Recent moves toward tighter regulation, such as Claude's introduction of identity verification, are giving users new things to worry about. But since open model performance is trailing behind leading models by only a few months, and local and cloud hosting environments are well established, the productivity loss from switching to open models is expected to be minimal.
