My Gender Transition Experience at GitHub

After joining GitHub, the remote-first culture that uses a handle (username) made the transition process very smooth. Unlike the difficulties I had experienced in the IT industry before due to real-name-based identity verification methods, at GitHub I was able to focus on my work while maintaining my own identity.

GitHub provides employees with the following practical support.

• Gender Affirming Care: Through medical expense support, employees can claim costs for voice training, HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy), and psychological therapy.
• Remote work environment: Remote work allows employees to do their jobs free from others' gaze regarding changes in appearance or voice.
• Inclusive communication: Thanks to text-based communication on Slack and GitHub, along with a culture that makes use of avatars, employees can collaborate without gender stereotypes.

My colleagues sincerely celebrated the news of my transition, and thanks to this supportive environment, I was able to work while enjoying the joy of living as my true self rather than facing social barriers.
