Atlassian Publishes DESIGN.md - Lessons Learned from Field-Testing Portable Design Context

To address the problem of AI-generated UI producing generic, formulaic output (slop) without brand identity, Atlassian is building a design context engine.

Atlassian tested DESIGN.md, an open-source Markdown format proposed by Google. This format consists of YAML frontmatter containing a brand's design tokens (colors, typography, etc.) and design principles, along with Markdown prose containing guidance for both humans and agents.

The testing showed that DESIGN.md demonstrates strong portability for certain workflows, but also confirmed its limitations in terms of sophistication and efficiency. To address this, Atlassian is leveraging the ADS MCP server and a structured content model to provide AI agents with rich design context, thereby improving the accuracy and quality of generated output while reducing token costs.
