Uber rapidly expanded its use of Claude Code and Cursor, exhausting its 2026 AI budget in just 4 months.

CTO Praveen Neppalli Naga said the pace of AI coding tool adoption far exceeded expectations, and that the budget needs to be redrawn.

Internal metrics are as follows.

• 95% of engineers use AI tools monthly.
• Internal background coding agents handle 1,800 code changes per week.
• About 70% of code committed in IDEs is AI-generated.
• Claude Code's usage share grew from 32% → 63% in just 2 months.
• Cursor is still used, but its growth has slowed.

The key point is that AI coding tools are no longer an experiment but have become a budget line item. Companies now find themselves needing to manage both development speed and token costs together.
