AWS Weekly Recap: The Next Step for AWS 2026, Amazon Quick, OpenAI Partnership, and More (May 4, 2026)

On April 28, Matt Garman, Colleen Aubrey, Julia White, and OpenAI leaders took the stage to introduce how agents are transforming enterprise operations. The key announcements were Amazon Quick, Amazon Connect, and the AWS and OpenAI partnership.

Amazon Quick expanded from a work AI assistant into a broader work tool. A desktop app (Preview), new pricing plans, and document, presentation, infographic, and image generation capabilities were added, along with expanded integrations with Google Workspace, Zoom, Airtable, Dropbox, and Microsoft Teams. Users can sign up directly with a personal email or a Google, Apple, GitHub, or Amazon account, and no AWS account is required.

Build custom apps with Quick (Preview) was also unveiled. Using natural language alone, users can create intelligent apps, dashboards, and web pages, which connect to local files, calendars, and messages so work can continue without a browser.

Amazon Connect was reorganized into four agentic AI solutions.

• Decisions: Combines 30 years of Amazon operations science with 25+ supply chain tools, focusing on proactive planning rather than crisis response.
• Talent (Preview): Uses AI interviews and science-based assessments to bring consistency to large-scale hiring.
• Customer: Delivers personalized customer experiences across voice, chat, and digital channels, letting conversational AI be configured in weeks.
• Health: Supports patient verification, appointment management, patient insights, ambient documentation, and medical coding.

AWS and OpenAI broadened their collaboration centered on Amazon Bedrock. The latest OpenAI models, including GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.4, are coming to the Bedrock API, with integrated security, governance, and cost controls. Codex on Amazon Bedrock (Preview) authenticates with AWS credentials for use via the Bedrock API, starting with Codex CLI, the desktop app, and a Visual Studio Code extension. Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents powered by OpenAI (Preview) was also announced, emphasizing fast execution and reliable long-running task control using the OpenAI harness.

Last week's releases included EC2 M8in/M8ib, R8in/R8ib, and C8ine/M8ine moving to GA, and Bedrock AgentCore adding recommendations, batch evaluation, and A/B testing to round out the agent optimization loop. AWS Lambda began supporting Ruby 4.0.

In other news, the Amazon Q Developer IDE plugin and paid subscriptions will end on April 30, 2027, with new sign-ups blocked starting May 15, 2026. Q Developer for the AWS Management Console, documentation, mobile app, Slack, and Teams is not affected. Starting May 29, 2026, Opus 4.6 will be removed from Q Developer Pro, with the latest coding model exclusive to Kiro. In the 10,000 AIdeas Competition, 20 winners were selected from submissions built with Kiro and the AWS Free Tier from 115 countries, and AWS Cloud Clubs was reorganized into AWS Student Builder Groups, expanding to 600+ universities and 63 countries. AWS Summit Seoul will be held on May 20.
