Apple Considers Introducing Multiple AI Models in iOS 27

According to Bloomberg, Apple is preparing a feature for iOS 27 that will let users choose from several third-party LLMs to use on their device. The internal name is Extensions, and it works by calling on the generative AI features of installed apps within Apple Intelligence whenever needed.

The scope being tested is as follows.

• It integrates with Apple Intelligence features such as Siri, Writing Tools, and Image Playground.
• It is expected to also apply to iPadOS 27 and macOS 27.
• Google and Anthropic models are being tested, and the currently offered ChatGPT may also remain an option.

While Apple is seen as having fallen behind in the AI race, it continues to generate steady AI-based revenue. Rather than building out large-scale new AI infrastructure, the company is focused on turning the hardware it already has into an AI-centered experience, and with Tim Cook's departure approaching, incoming CEO John Ternus may carry this strategy forward.
