France's De-Windowsification

France's Digital Administration Agency (DINUM) has instructed each ministry to conduct a survey of dependence on technology from outside the EU and to establish a plan to break away from it. Among the key targets across the administration is replacing Windows with Linux.

The backdrop is the judgment that dependence on US technology could become a strategic risk. The French government is moving in the direction of reducing reliance on proprietary technology through an open-source-centered transition and strengthening control over its administrative infrastructure.
