Asking the Hard Questions

Anthropic is pursuing a new initiative to deeply understand the expectations and concerns people hold about the changes AI technology will bring. While many anticipate scientific progress and prosperity through AI, they also express deep concerns about job losses, the decline of creative value, the potential loss of human agency, and the possibility of misuse.

Anthropic has been accumulating extensive data through efforts such as the Anthropic Public Record, which gathered opinions from 52,000 Americans, and the Anthropic Interviewer, which surveyed 81,000 Claude users across 159 countries. In addition, Anthropic reviews its public-benefit mission through the Anthropic Institute and the Long-Term Benefit Trust.

Now Anthropic wants to receive direct questions from the public about how AI will affect jobs, society, and families, as well as how its potential in fields like science and medicine can be realized. For the questions collected, Anthropic plans to transparently disclose the specific actions it takes in response, and to clearly report any shortcomings in meeting its goals.
