OpenAI and Amazon Announce Strategic Partnership

OpenAI and Amazon have entered a multi-year strategic partnership to accelerate AI innovation for enterprises and startups. Amazon will invest a total of $50 billion in OpenAI, starting with an initial $15 billion, with an additional $35 billion to be invested if certain conditions are met.

The two companies will jointly develop a Stateful Runtime Environment based on OpenAI models through Amazon Bedrock. This is a next-generation development environment designed to let developers maintain context, remember previous work, and utilize a variety of software tools and data sources, and it is expected to launch within the next few months.

In addition, AWS will serve as the exclusive third-party cloud deployment provider for OpenAI Frontier, OpenAI's cutting-edge enterprise platform. Through Frontier, organizations can build and operate AI agent teams with built-in shared context, governance, and security features, without having to manage infrastructure themselves.

On the infrastructure side, the companies' existing $38 billion agreement will be expanded to $100 billion over 8 years. OpenAI plans to use approximately 2GW of Trainium capacity through AWS infrastructure to support workloads such as Stateful Runtime and Frontier. This includes the Trainium3 and the Trainium4 chip, which is slated for release in 2027.

Finally, the two companies will jointly develop custom models to be embedded in Amazon's customer-facing applications. This will allow Amazon developers to build more sophisticated customer service AI products and agents using OpenAI models alongside the existing Amazon Nova lineup.
