Stargate Community

OpenAI is working to ensure that Stargate campuses contribute to local communities. AI infrastructure is a key factor for U.S. competitiveness and economic opportunity, playing a role in revitalizing local economies through job creation and increased local revenue.

Since the Stargate project was announced in January 2025, the goal has been to expand U.S. AI infrastructure to 10GW by 2029. The first site in Abilene, Texas is currently operating, and additional site development is underway in several regions including New Mexico, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

Every Stargate site establishes a customized Stargate Community plan that reflects local needs. The core principle is to directly cover the energy costs required for operations so that local residents' electricity bills do not rise. To this end, the following approaches are adopted:

• Fully covering energy and grid upgrade costs: Directly funding the additional power generation and grid upgrades required for the project.
• Flexible load operation: Participating in grid stabilization programs, such as reducing power consumption during periods of high grid load.

Key ongoing examples include:

• Wisconsin: Partnering with Oracle and Vantage to develop solar and battery storage, fully funding the infrastructure investment costs to prevent rate increases for existing customers.
• Michigan: Partnering with DTE Energy on battery storage fully funded by the project, ensuring no impact on existing customers' energy supply and rates.
• Texas: Partnering with SB Energy to build new power generation and storage facilities that will supply most of the power needed to operate the Milam County campus.
