Big Tech's Carbon Emissions from Data Centers Surge to About a Third of France's Total Emissions

Carbon emissions from major Big Tech companies including Microsoft, Amazon, and Google have increased by nearly 20% over the past year due to data center infrastructure expansion for AI model training and operation.

The situation for each major company is as follows:

• Microsoft: Carbon emissions increased by 25% year-over-year, reaching 20 million mTCO₂e.
• Google: Emissions increased by 18% due to supply chain activities and business expansion.
• Amazon: Total emissions increased by 16%, with supply chain emissions, including data center construction, increasing by 20%.

This increase in emissions poses a major challenge to the Net Zero goals that these companies have been pursuing. Experts point out the contradictory situation in which companies claim to be solving environmental problems through AI solutions, while actually emitting massive amounts of carbon through building AI infrastructure.
