Ireland's Data Centers Now Account for 23% of National Electricity Consumption

In 2025, electricity consumption by Ireland's data centers increased by 10% year-over-year, reaching 23% of the nation's total metered electricity consumption. This marks a sharp rise compared to 14% in 2021 and 20% in 2023.

Data center power demand shows the following characteristics:

• Surpassing Household Consumption: Data center consumption exceeds that of urban households (18%) and rural households (9%).
• Sustained Growth: The share, which was 5% in 2015, more than tripled by 2019, reaching 7,663 GWh.

In response, Ireland's regulator (CRU) has implemented a de facto moratorium on grid connections for new data centers, particularly in the Dublin area. Additionally, going forward, data center operators using 10MW or more of power will face strict regulations requiring them to have their own generators or battery systems in place to supply power back to the national grid when needed.
