Amazon SQS Turns 20: 20 Years of Reliable Messaging at Massive Scale

Launched in 2006 alongside Amazon EC2 and Amazon S3, Amazon SQS has played a key role in reducing coupling between services in distributed systems and enabling asynchronous communication.

Over the past 5 years, SQS has made dramatic advances in performance and security to keep up with increasingly complex workload patterns. Key updates include the following.

• FIFO Queue High Throughput Mode: Since its introduction in 2021, continuous performance improvements have enabled support for up to 70,000 TPS per API action in certain regions.
• Enhanced Security: SSE-SQS (server-side encryption using AWS managed keys) was introduced in 2021, and since 2022 it has been applied by default to all new queues.
• Operational Convenience: The message redrive feature for Dead-letter queues (DLQ) has been extended to the console, SDK, and CLI, and ABAC (attribute-based access control) supports flexible, tag-based permission management.
