Designing the Future of School AI Education with 400,000 Teachers

OpenAI is partnering with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) to establish the National Academy for AI Instruction. This five-year initiative aims to equip approximately 400,000 K-12 teachers in the United States with AI proficiency, creating an environment where teachers can take the lead in utilizing AI technology.

OpenAI will provide a total of $10 million in support over five years. In addition to $8 million in direct funding, OpenAI will provide $2 million worth of in-kind resources, including engineering support, computing resources, and technical guidance. Microsoft and Anthropic will also participate as partners in this project.

The Academy plans to establish a flagship campus in New York City and expand education hubs across the United States by 2030. Educators will receive the following benefits:

• Tokens and API credits for developing classroom-customized tools
• Workshops, online courses, and hands-on professional development programs

This collaboration focuses not on AI replacing teachers, but on helping teachers use AI as a tool to improve the quality of education and reduce administrative work, allowing them to focus on the core work of teaching.
