Estonia and OpenAI to Bring ChatGPT to Schools Nationwide

OpenAI is partnering with the Estonian government on an initiative to become the world's first to integrate ChatGPT Edu into a national education system. Starting in September 2025, the nationwide rollout will begin with secondary school students (grades 10 and 11).

Through this partnership, OpenAI will provide ChatGPT Edu and API services along with technical support. Key use cases include:

• Teacher support: Reducing administrative workload and supporting lesson planning through custom GPTs
• Student support: Providing feedback, learning assistance, and fostering creativity and critical thinking skills

Estonia's move is part of its AI Leap 2025 initiative. This continues the spirit of the Tiger Leap project, which made Estonia a digital leader in 1996, by attempting to integrate AI as a core element of education.

ChatGPT Edu is designed for large-scale deployment at educational institutions, featuring:

• Support for the latest models and GDPR compliance
• Enterprise-level security and control features
• Cost-effective pricing structure

This case is expected to be the first government-level example of ensuring AI access for students across an entire nation, rather than just at specific campuses.
