A new way to write and code with ChatGPT, canvas unveiled

OpenAI has introduced canvas, a new interface that goes beyond simple chat to let users collaborate with ChatGPT on writing and coding projects. canvas opens in a separate window, providing an environment where users and ChatGPT can generate and refine ideas side by side.

Users can highlight specific sections to request focused feedback from ChatGPT, and can also directly edit text or code themselves. Built on GPT-4o, this interface understands the context of the entire project to perform sophisticated edits and reviews.

Key features include the following:

• Writing: suggesting edits, adjusting document length, changing reading level (from kindergarten level to graduate school level), reviewing grammar and clarity, and adding emojis
• Coding: reviewing code, adding logs for debugging, adding comments, fixing bugs, and porting to various languages (JavaScript, Python, C++, etc.)

OpenAI trained the model using synthetic data generation techniques leveraging outputs from o1-preview so that the model can launch canvas at the appropriate moments. It is currently being rolled out first to ChatGPT Plus and Team users, with Enterprise and Edu users gaining access starting next week, and free users gaining access after the beta ends.
