Using GPT-4 to Improve Education and Learning in Brazil

Arco Educação, Brazil's largest education operating system company, is partnering with OpenAI to build AI tools that improve teacher efficiency. The strategy aims to help teachers move away from administrative tasks and focus on each student's individual learning journey.

Brazilian teachers spend about a third of their working hours on administrative tasks, 40% higher than the global average. Arco Educação aims to improve education quality by using AI to reduce the burden of operational tasks such as lesson planning and grading.

Arco Educação chose OpenAI among several generative AI models for the following reasons:

• Brazilian Portuguese performance: GPT-4 recorded 90% accuracy in generating and evaluating educational content, overwhelming the competing model (73%).
• Quality and reliability: The faculty approval rate for generated questions was 70%, higher than the next-best model (56%).
• Cost efficiency: Lightweight models such as GPT-4o mini and GPT-3.5 were fine-tuned to balance performance and cost.

The core product, Teacher Assistant, supports lesson planning and dramatically shortens the time needed to create Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students requiring special education, such as those with autism or dyslexia. Teachers can generate customized activities and questions simply by entering student characteristics.

The pilot is currently running in 50 schools, with plans to expand to 600 schools and about 70,000 students by the end of this year.
