Leaving GitHub for Forgejo

As GitHub is absorbed into Microsoft's CoreAI division and Copilot's data training policy changes, concerns over code ownership and security are growing.

GitHub's Organizational Changes and Ownership Issues GitHub has been folded under Microsoft's CoreAI division, losing its independent leadership. As a result, pushing code to GitHub is equivalent to providing code to a unit under Microsoft's AI organization, which raises FISA 702 and CLOUD Act jurisdiction issues.

Copilot Data Training Policy Change (Opt-out) Starting April 2026, interaction data from Copilot (Free, Pro, Pro+) users will shift to an opt-out structure where it is used by default for AI model training unless the user explicitly declines. Since there is no repository-level blocking feature, even interaction context within private repositories may be collected unless the user manually opts out in their account settings.

Reliability Degradation Due to AI Load Rapid growth in agentic AI workflows has increased load, leading to more frequent GitHub outages. From May 2025 to April 2026, 257 incidents were recorded, which is related to GitHub's operational direction prioritizing the expansion of AI features.

Forgejo as an Alternative To secure digital autonomy and code ownership, the migration moves to a self-hosted environment using the open-source platform Forgejo.
