AWS Weekly Recap: OpenAI Partnership, AWS Elemental Inference, Strands Labs and More (March 2, 2026)

This week, AWS built on the AI-DLC workshop to emphasize the shift of customer AI adoption into production. The core message is turning experimental-level AI into executable systems that deliver business value.

The biggest news is the multi-year strategic partnership between OpenAI and Amazon. Amazon will invest $50 billion, and AWS will collaborate with OpenAI to make it easier for enterprises and startups to build, deploy, and operate AI. AWS and OpenAI will also jointly build a Stateful Runtime Environment, and AWS will become the exclusive third-party cloud deployment provider for OpenAI Frontier.

This collaboration also extends an existing $38 billion multi-year agreement by an additional $100 billion over 8 years. OpenAI plans to consume approximately 2GW of Trainium capacity, covering both Trainium3 and the next-generation Trainium4 chips.

This week's launches and updates were also wide-ranging.

• AWS Security Hub Extended: A full-stack enterprise security plan bundling partner solutions such as 7AI, Britive, CrowdStrike, Cyera, Island, Noma, Okta, Oligo, Opti, Proofpoint, SailPoint, Splunk, Upwind, and Zscaler
• AWS Elemental Inference: A managed AI service that automatically converts live and on-demand video for mobile and social platforms, generating vertical formats and highlight clips in near real-time
• MediaConvert Probe API: Quickly analyzes header metadata without actually encoding media files, returning codec, pixel format, and color space information
• OpenAI-compatible Projects API in Amazon Bedrock: Provides isolation, access control, cost tracking, and observability for multi-application AI workloads
• Amazon Location Service LLM Context: Supports agent context in Kiro, Claude Code plugin, and Agent Skills formats
• Amazon EKS Node Monitoring Agent: Released as open source
• AWS AppConfig + New Relic: Integrated to perform faster automatic rollback during feature flag deployments

As a separate piece of news, Strands Labs was unveiled. It's a separate Git organization for experimental agentic AI projects, with three initial projects: Robots, Robots Sim, and AI Functions.

Other practical resources introduced include large-scale multi-account operation case studies, how to build event agents with Bedrock AgentCore and Knowledge Bases, and new output formats in AWS CLI v2. Event news covered NVIDIA GTC 2026, multiple AWS Summits, and Community Days schedules.
