Sea's Vision for the Future of Codex-Based AI Agent Software Development

Sea has introduced Codex across its development organization, viewing AI-assisted coding not as a productivity tool but as a shift in engineering methodology. According to internal data, 87% of all users are weekly active users, and amid large-scale microservices and complex legacy dependencies, the biggest bottleneck is seen as context understanding rather than code entry.

David Chen cited contextual understanding of large codebases as Codex's core strength. Among developers who rated Codex 4 or higher, 73% said they would recommend it to colleagues, and Sea explained that this allows developers to experiment faster and focus more on higher-level design and product judgment.

AI agents are now taking on an actual execution layer within CI/CD pipelines.

Developers are increasingly shifting from code writers to system orchestrators, and Sea sees Southeast Asia's multilingual, distributed environment as a potential proving ground for AI-based software development. Together with OpenAI, the company is also launching its first regional Codex Hackathon Series, starting in Singapore and continuing through Indonesia, Taiwan, and Vietnam, aiming to expand the developer ecosystem.
