Facing an Unfamiliar Shift: Fly.io's Transition to Sprites

Fly.io is fully revising its business direction, moving away from its existing cloud infrastructure-centered model to focus on Sprites, a dedicated compute environment for AI agents.

While the existing cloud service focused on convenience for human developers and app deployment, the new strategy aims to provide optimal infrastructure for AI agents to code and execute. As AI fundamentally changes the way software is developed, the judgment is that an environment where agents can write and run code on their own will become the key.

The major changes are as follows:

• Launch of Sprites: A dedicated compute environment where AI agents can safely and efficiently execute code.
• Executive change: Scott Johnston joins as CEO, with organizational restructuring underway in line with the new vision.
• Shift in infrastructure philosophy: Moving beyond simple app hosting to focus on building adaptive software infrastructure in which agents can operate autonomously.
