xAI preparing credit-based billing system ahead of Grok Build launch

xAI is preparing a credit-based billing system for its soon-to-be-released Grok Build. A new settings page for checking credit balances for coding tasks was recently discovered in a platform build, but it remains non-functional and in early development.

Grok Build is expected to offer coding work in two ways. Users could work locally via Grok CLI, or remotely through a dedicated web interface, and it's likely to include a Model Arena where multiple agents perform the same task in parallel.

The billing approach appears to give subscribers a monthly credit allocation, with an option to purchase additional credits for heavier usage. This is a hybrid model similar to Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex, showing that the industry is converging on a standard monetization approach for agentic coding tools.

The launch timing remains uncertain. However, the fact that xAI is already building billing mechanisms into the product suggests a signal of moving beyond beta toward general availability.
