Accelerating Scientific Discovery with ChatGPT for Academic Researchers

OpenAI announced the 'ChatGPT for Academic Researchers' program, which will provide free access to its frontier models to 100,000 scientists, mathematicians, and engineers at selected academic institutions. The program aims to ensure that the benefits of AI are not concentrated among a few companies, but are delivered directly into the hands of researchers to drive scientific progress.

Starting with 10,000 researchers this summer, OpenAI plans to expand the support scale through 2027. Participants will have access to the latest models, including GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, from launch, and can invite up to 4 colleagues from their institution. Notably, the workspace provides business-grade security, and input data is not used for model training by default.

Researchers can use AI across a variety of fields, including:

• Genomic analysis and protein modeling
• Literature review and paper writing
• Hypothesis testing and research execution
• Writing code and analyzing results (using Codex)

Including this program, OpenAI plans to invest more than $250 million by 2027 to support external scientific research. This is part of a broader effort aimed at democratizing scientific tools, alongside the NextGenAI initiative supporting research institutions and the U.S. Department of Energy's Genesis Mission.
