Nvidia and Tech CEOs Back Open Source AI

Major tech leaders including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang have released a letter supporting open source AI, arguing that open weights will promote competition, lower costs, and prevent monopolization by a small number of companies.

On the other hand, Anthropic is pushing back, expressing concerns that powerful open-weight models could remove safety guardrails and become a pathway for cyberattacks or misuse. In particular, friction is intensifying over Distillation technology—which uses the outputs of large models to train smaller models—between closed labs that view it as intellectual property infringement and the open source camp that sees it as an essential technique for efficient model distribution.

In addition, as AI model efficiency increases, overall demand is surging in a phenomenon known as the Jevons Paradox, creating a structure that benefits chip makers and developers alike, while China is aggressively releasing high-quality open source models to bypass hardware restrictions, countering Western monopolization.
