Cloud CISO Perspective: Why AI Threat Defense Is Becoming the New Board Standard

Security is no longer an operational cost but is establishing itself as the business foundation underpinning generative AI adoption and entry into new markets. As every major business initiative becomes connected to AI, using AI requires a secure foundation.

Google Cloud emphasized that boards and executive leadership must demand that CISOs and business/technology leaders shift their strategy to focus on speed, scope, and scale. Defense systems need to become AI-native, agentic, and open in structure.

Defense must be automated to match the speed of automated attacks, leverage the organization's deep business context, and connect multiple security tools into a unified platform. This enables security operations to shift from a manual, reactive approach to a continuous, automated capability.

Drawing on the experience gained from defending its own and its customers' environments, Google Cloud developed AI Threat Defense (AITD). Rather than directly managing technical execution, boards should establish a governance framework that promotes operational modernization, and should examine leadership around the following strategic questions.

• How does AI security investment accelerate business expansion and the pace of innovation
• Whether defense capabilities are in place to respond to automated attack cycles
• Whether security tools and data are integrated to enable consistent operations
• Whether the governance and resilience needed for AI adoption have been secured
