Modeling Device Capabilities for Analysis

Netflix offers a variety of features—such as 4K streaming, immersive audio, live streaming, and cloud gaming—across many devices. However, since devices differ in RAM, CPU core count, display performance, and platform support, not all features can be supported equally on every device.

To deliver the optimal user experience, Netflix built a comprehensive device capability data model that represents the hardware and platform capabilities of each device model. It also integrated feature flags from internal systems, enabling more granular management of feature availability across the global device landscape.

This approach serves as the foundation for identifying bottlenecks that limit feature support, analyzing feature adoption rates, and accelerating the rollout and spread of new features.
