New Ways to Learn and Teach with ChatGPT Work and Codex

OpenAI has released three educational plugins for ChatGPT Work and Codex to enable students and educators to leverage AI based on class materials and work contexts. These plugins bundle apps, role-specific features, instructions, and common workflows, allowing users to utilize them without manually crafting complex prompts.

The plugins are structured as follows:

• K–12 Educator Plugin: Supports lesson planning and classroom material creation, generating level-appropriate resources and interactive visuals while providing learning-related insights. It integrates with Learning Commons to create materials aligned with local academic standards and educational frameworks, while teachers retain direct control over pedagogy, grading, and the execution of AI tasks.
• University Educator Plugin: Supports syllabus revision, creation of interactive websites and multimedia assessments, adaptation of materials for diverse learners, and content packaging for LMSs. It connects to approved tools such as calendars and documents to maintain context across teaching, research, and daily tasks.
• University Student Plugin: Transforms current learning content into personalized learning experiences. Users can practice difficult concepts with a guided tutor and create study guides, quizzes, flashcards, and interactive learning materials.

The new plugins are available in institutional and district deployment environments for ChatGPT Edu and ChatGPT for Teachers. OpenAI emphasized the principle that educational AI should support rather than replace learning, and that students and educators must retain final control.

ChatGPT Edu is an institution-managed workspace launched in 2024, offering enterprise-grade privacy, security, and management features. ChatGPT for Teachers was launched in 2025 and is provided free of charge to verified US K–12 teachers and school districts, including protective features supporting FERPA requirements and data privacy agreements.
