OpenAI Quietly Acquires Voice-Cloning Startup Weights.gg, Then Disbands the Team

OpenAI quietly acquired voice-cloning startup Weights.gg, taking over its 6-person team and IP, and the existing hosted service was shut down on March 31, 2026. Weights.gg had raised about $4 million according to PitchBook, and per NYT, the team was dispersed across several OpenAI organizations, with a standalone follow-up product considered unlikely.

Voice-cloning capability itself has already been commoditized. Open models like Voxtral and F5-TTS can clone a voice from just 5-15 seconds of sample audio on consumer-grade GPUs, so this acquisition looks less like a technology grab and more like a cleanup of a public catalog.

Weights.gg's Replay hosted voice models of celebrities including Taylor Swift, Samuel L. Jackson, and Trump, while Voice Engine has remained in limited release for safety reasons since its March 2024 blog post.

OpenAI is also pushing voice capabilities in its Realtime API via GPT-Realtime-2, GPT-Realtime-Translate, and GPT-Realtime-Whisper, while maintaining its ban on unauthorized impersonation and its requirement to disclose AI-generated voices. With an S-1 filing expected ahead of a listing at the end of 2026, how this acquisition and its IP risk get disclosed will be worth watching.
