Improvements to Fable 5's Biological Safety Measures

Anthropic updated the biological safety measures for Claude Fable 5, reducing biology-related fallbacks by approximately 85%. As a result, Fable 5 can now directly answer a wider range of everyday health and education questions, interpret test results, explain symptoms, and assist with biology learning, while also enhancing support for clinical tasks performed by medical professionals.

While Fable 5 can outperform experts in certain complex biology tasks and provide practical operational support to researchers, these same capabilities pose a risk of misuse for the development of biological weapons. In particular, for dual-use domains such as virology, toxicology, and molecular design—where it is difficult to distinguish between beneficial research and harmful use—requests are still routed to Opus 5.

Anthropic assessed that Fable 5 could provide malicious actors with capabilities they previously lacked, leading to the blocking of most biology-related questions at launch. Currently, an automated safety classifier detects protected tasks or harmful outputs and reroutes the model when necessary, thereby reducing false positives while managing potential risks in the field of biology.
