Anthropic Builds In-House AI Chip Design Team

Anthropic has begun building a ‘custom silicon team’ by hiring engineers to design its own AI chips. The company plans to co-design hardware and AI models to run technology faster and more efficiently.

Anthropic has entered into AI computing hardware agreements with AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD to meet the growing demand for Claude. However, as competition for AI infrastructure intensifies, the company appears to have determined that relying solely on external suppliers is insufficient to meet demand.

This is not the first time Anthropic has pursued in-house chip development. OpenAI has unveiled the Jalapeño chip, manufactured by Broadcom and specialized for inference tasks, while Google DeepMind utilizes Alphabet’s TPU and Meta employs its own MTIA AI accelerators.

Previously, The Information reported that Anthropic was considering Samsung Electronics as a potential partner for producing custom AI chips. Anthropic subsequently confirmed its plans to build this chip design team to TechCrunch.
