Spotify x Anthropic Live: Talking Agentic Development

At a "Let's Talk Agentic Development" fireside chat held at Spotify's London HQ on March 30, Spotify chief architect Niklas Gustavsson discussed how agentic-first development actually works in practice, alongside Anthropic's David Soria Parra (MCP co-creator) and Christian Ryan (applied AI lead).

The core of the conversation wasn't just demos, but a transition that includes tools, infrastructure, and organizational structure. It was emphasized that AI agents are going beyond simply changing how developers work, and are redefining how software itself is built.

In particular, Opus 4.5, released on November 25, 2025, served as a clear inflection point according to internal metrics. David shared that since then, he witnessed engineers who used to sit in front of their IDE in the office shift toward being terminal-centric within just a few weeks.

On Spotify's side, the evolution of the background coding agent Honk was introduced. It started out as deterministic code migration, but has now evolved into a Slack-native coding agent, and has expanded to the stage of handling complex software migrations that cross multiple repositories.

• Spotify has enabled anyone to invoke the agent via a Slack message, and in practice, usage is increasing in the form of "discussing a problem and then handing it directly to Honk via @mention."
• Internally, agents are also handling large-scale migrations spanning thousands of repos.
• As a next step, the direction proposed was to further expand Honk's role so it can handle more development work in the background.

Anthropic and Spotify also emphasized the importance of context engineering and control. They explained that what matters in large-scale environments isn't endlessly increasing complexity, but standardizing a simple, reproducible setup for each engineer, well-organized Claude MD configurations, and skills that effectively capture roles and domains.

In a situation where agents produce code faster than humans, testing, review, and governance become the new bottleneck. Ultimately, it was emphasized that what matters is not who generated the code, but clearly establishing accountability for outcomes, and that both humans and agents should be evaluated on an outcome-based standard.

Finally, David noted that 2025 was the year of code generation, and that the next frontier is the area where agents take on work that no one wants to do but is nonetheless essential, such as maintenance and deletion. Spotify's Backstage is evolving from a developer portal for humans into an agent-first platform, and Anthropic's internal ant-fooding culture continues to generate new product ideas as well.
