GitHub Copilot Introduces Token-Based Pricing

Starting June 1, GitHub Copilot will shift from its existing subscription model to token-based (raw token billing) pricing. This change is expected to have a significant impact on development practices and business models, beyond a simple price adjustment.

Rising Costs of 'Vibe Coding' Until now, many developers have freely used a trial-and-error approach (vibe coding)—repeatedly entering prompts until they get the desired result—without worrying about cost. However, under token-based pricing, imprecise prompts or unscoped agent usage will directly lead to increased costs. As a result, the ability to clearly define problems and craft precise prompts will become a key factor determining economic efficiency.

Billing Model Confusion for Freelancers and Agencies Freelancers and development agencies now face a new challenge. Even if AI is used to reduce work hours, compute costs based on token usage will still be incurred.

• Should clients be billed separately for compute costs in addition to work hours?
• Or should agencies absorb the compute costs and continue billing by the hour as before?

At a time when clients take AI usage costs for granted, adding a 'token usage fee' line item to invoices could become a new source of conflict.
