Anthropic Institute Launches

Anthropic has launched The Anthropic Institute to address the biggest challenges frontier AI will pose to society and the economy. The organization brings together research from within Anthropic to provide information that other researchers and the public can use during the transition to more powerful AI systems.

Anthropic believes AI progress is already very fast and will become even more dramatic over the next two years. The company explains that AI has already reached the point of detecting cybersecurity vulnerabilities, expanding agentic autonomy, performing real-world work, and even accelerating AI development itself, and it sees the company facing issues like jobs and the economy, societal resilience, AI value alignment, and recursive self-improvement more fully going forward.

Jack Clark will lead the newly established institute while also serving as Anthropic's Head of Public Benefit. The institute will integrate and expand the Frontier Red Team, Societal Impacts, and Economic Research teams, and will initially also work on deepening understanding of AI progress forecasting and its interaction with the legal system.

Key people joining include:

• Matt Botvinick: leading research on AI and the rule of law
• Anton Korinek: researching how transformative AI will change the fundamental nature of economic activity
• Zoë Hitzig: connecting economic research with model training and development

Anthropic is also growing its Public Policy organization at the same time. This team will handle agendas such as model safety, transparency, energy ratepayer protections, infrastructure investments, export controls, and democratic AI leadership, with Sarah Heck serving as Head of Public Policy. The company plans to open its first DC office this spring and rapidly expand its global policy influence.
