How Australia Uses Claude: An Analysis from the Anthropic Economic Index

Australia accounts for 1.6% of Claude.ai global traffic, emerging as a high-adoption country that uses Claude at more than 4 times the expected rate given its population size. However, adoption is not evenly spread, concentrating in New South Wales (37%) and Victoria (31%).

The usage context is similar to other English-speaking countries. In Australia, 46% of Claude conversations were for work, 7% for coursework, and 47% for personal use, a distribution common among high-income, high-adoption economies.

However, the nature of tasks was more diverse. While the Computer & Mathematical category, which holds the largest share globally, is also the top category in Australia, it was about 8 percentage points lower than the global average, with the gap filled by non-development work such as management, office and administrative, personal life, finance, and business documents.

Australian users tend to submit relatively more complex prompts, but it was estimated that the time needed to complete tasks without AI is about 20% shorter than average. At the same time, the AI autonomy score was low at 3.38/5, suggesting an interpretation that usage involves more collaboration with Claude rather than fully delegating tasks to it.
