Launching a Science Blog

Anthropic is launching a new Science Blog covering AI and science. The blog will cover not only research from inside Anthropic but also collaborations with external researchers and labs, as well as how scientists use AI in practice.

Behind this is Anthropic's mission to accelerate the pace of scientific progress. AI is already changing parts of scientific workflows in practice, such as mathematicians discovering new proofs, a solo researcher performing large-scale computational analysis, and biologists uncovering gene relationships in large-scale cell data.

However, current AI scientific capabilities are still close to beta. While it appears to surpass humans at certain stages, it can hallucinate results, respond in an overly compliant way, or get stuck on problems that are easy for a domain expert. So this is currently seen as a transitional phase where AI greatly accelerates research, but people are still needed.

The blog will feature three types of posts going forward.

• Features: In-depth pieces explaining specific achievements or research trends
• Workflows: Practical guides for using AI across the natural sciences and beyond
• Field notes: Roundups of notable results, new tools, and open questions

Two pieces are also being published alongside the launch. One is Matthew Schwartz's "Vibe physics: The AI grad student," which covers the process of supervising Claude in actual theoretical physics calculations. The other is a tutorial on orchestrating long-running tasks in scientific computation.

Anthropic's related programs are also introduced. AI for Science provides API credits for high-impact research, and Claude for Life Sciences focuses on helping life sciences researchers and R&D teams. Anthropic is also participating as a key partner in the Genesis Mission, which brings together industry, academia, and government, and is accepting proposals of interest at [email protected].
