Zero Data Retention Offered for Frontier Models

OpenAI announced that it offers Zero Data Retention (ZDR) to API customers, ensuring that prompts and model responses are not stored after request processing. Customer content is not used for review by OpenAI staff and is not used for model training without explicit consent.

While existing ZDR-compatible safety systems evaluated individual interactions only, Private Safety Processing is designed to identify patterns across related interactions. This allows OpenAI to detect potential misuse without staff accessing the original content.

Customer content remains in customer-controlled infrastructure or is stored encrypted with customer keys in OpenAI infrastructure. When risk is detected, OpenAI receives only limited safety signals indicating the type of activity, and customers can investigate alerts using their own systems and share information with OpenAI if necessary.
